چکیده

We report the observation of multiple laser thresholds in the many-atom cavity QED microlaser. Traveling-wave coupling and a supersonic atom beam are used to create a well-defined atom-cavity interaction. Multiple thresholds are observed as jumps in photon number due to oscillatory gain. Although the number of intra-cavity atoms is large, up to N ∼ 10, the dynamics of the microlaser agree with a single atom theory. This agreement is supported by quantum trajectory simulations of a many-atom microlaser and a semiclassical microlaser theory. We discuss the relation of the microlaser with the micromaser and conventional lasers.

Spectrum of the cavity-QED microlaser: strong coupling effects in the frequency pulling at off resonance.

We report the first experimental observation of the cavity-QED microlaser spectrum, specifically the unconventional frequency pulling brought by a strong atom-cavity coupling at off resonance. The pulling is enhanced quadratically by the atom-cavity coupling to result in a sensitive response to the number of pumping atoms (2.1 kHz per atom maximally). Periodic variation of the pulling due to th...

Observation of sub-poisson photon statistics in the cavity-QED microlaser.

We have measured the second-order correlation function of the cavity-QED microlaser output and observed a transition from photon bunching to antibunching with increasing average number of intracavity atoms. The observed correlation times and the transition from super- to sub-Poisson photon statistics can be well described by gain-loss feedback or enhanced-reduced restoring action against fluctu...

Effect of dissipative forces on the theory of a single-atom microlaser.

A single-atom microlaser involving Poissonian input of atoms with a fixed flight time through an optical resonator is described. The influence of the cavity reservoir during the interactions of successive individual atoms with the cavity field is included in the analysis. Atomic decay is also considered, as it is nonnegligible in the optical regime. During the random intervals of absence of any...

Quantum trajectory analysis of a thresholdlike transition in the microlaser

In a recent microlaser experiment @K. An et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 3375 ~1994!#, a thresholdlike transition of intracavity mean photon number as a function of intracavity mean atom number has been observed. In this paper the behavior is explored with quantum trajectory simulations. It is shown that the transition is caused by enhanced atom-cavity Rabi interaction due to the increase of the i...

Proposal to produce long-lived mesoscopic superpositions through an atom-driven field interaction

The mastery of techniques for preparing cavity-field states through atom-field interaction in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) is crucial to many useful applications in quantum optics. As high-Q cavities have permitted the preparation of cavity-field superpositions of the form |Ψ〉 = ∣α eiφ 〉 + ∣α e−iφ 〉) / √ 2, with mean number of oscillator quanta |α| ≈ 10, mesoscopic quantum coherence in ...
